Building A Profitable Website From Start To Finish Tutorial (Part 3)

Posted by Paddy | May 24, 2009 .

Welcome back everyone! Glad you could make it.

Today we are going to choose just one niche for our very first money making website. By now, you should have 5 potental niches as we discussed in Building A Profitable Website From Start To Finish Tutorial (Part 2). Our next step is to choose just one of these.

Analysing and choosing our niche

Our aim now is to select a niche that gets plenty of visitors from the search engines such as Google and Yahoo. We do this by using a free tool called Gtrends. Again, if you have read my eBook Sleep Money System then you will know how to use this tool already. If you haven’t I will give you a brief tutorial.

Gtrends allows us to check if a particular niche is profitable or not. Let me correct myself. Gtrends, gives us an indication of how profitable a niche is by estimating (using data from the search engines) how many visitors we will get for our particular search term. A search term is the text that a person types into the google or yahoo search box. If we have chosen ‘Red Cotton Socks’ as our niche, then we need to check what search terms a person uses to find ‘Red Cotton Socks’. It maybe that they use the exact phrase ‘Red Cotton Socks’ or something very similar to this. Lets find out…

Go to the Gtrends website and type in ‘Red Cotton Socks’. You will notice that the results come back as ‘red cotton socks ladies’.

To the left of this there is the number 1. This means that there are 1 searches per month for this search term. Now click on the bar graph on the right. This gives you a little more information on the search term.

You will notice that Gtrends reports that there is zero competition for this search term and the expected number of visits per day will be around 18. As this is just an example and as such, it’s probably not a good niche to use as you will not get many vistors. I am however, going to use this niche for the rest of the tutorials.

If this was a beter niche, Gtrends would list a series of related keywords that match your niche. We need to choose the related search term that gets the most searches AND the most daily visits. Once we have analysed the 5 niches we chose from the last tutorial, we need to choose just one for our new website. This will be based on the data we have extracted from Gtrends. The niche with the best search term results and daily visits will be the one we choose. Again, check out my eBook for more information on how to do this.

Compiling our keyword list & ordering by importance

Our next step is to extract all the keywords (search terms) from Gtrends that match our niche. If you typed ‘Red Cotton Socks’ into Gtrends then it will only have displayed one. However, normally you will have 100+ results in the list. Copy all these and copy them into a spread sheet. I normally have one spreadsheet per website so I can keep track of which keywords I am using for which one. Next, order they keywords by the number of searches per month. The one with the highest number of searches will be our primary keyword. The rest will be secondary keywords which we will use to help drive visitors to our new website. Our primary key word will be used when we purhase our domain name.

Until the next tutorial, have a play around with the tools I have given you so far. You will need to use these on a regular basis if you are going to be building money making websites. Don’t worry, they will become second nature to you soon!
